![]() Recently, I visited a friend who had a Minolta Maxxum 7 Camera. I bought it with two kit lenses-an 18-70 mm lense and a 75-300 Zoom lense. The lenses for those very basic cameras do not fit the Sony Alpha Camera. My very first 35mm SLR was a Minolta 101 then a Minolta SCII. I started using Minolta cameras when I first started learning photography. I never liked the old push/pull zoom method used by the older lens. It's better optically, has VR, and changes focal length with a quick, precise twist of the zoom ring. I replaced my cheap, old 75-300mm AF Nikkor with Nikon's current 70-300mm AF VR lens. All of the AF lenses that were used with my old Nikon film SLRs perform flawlessly on my Nikon's DSLRs. I know very little about Minolta lenses, but I'm sure that you can find mediocre to excellent older lenses made by Minolta and Nikon. You might try one that you'd never have considered and find that it feels so right, it's love at first sight.Īlso how is the quality of older nikkor lenses vs the Not just the ones from Sony and Nikon, but also those from Canon, Pentax and Olympus. If you have a good local photo shop, check out how comfortable they feel in your hands. This includes not only how it feels in your hands, but how the buttons, dials and switches are laid out, and how the menus are structured. Many people find that the design of Nikon's DSLRs is better from an ergonomic standpoint. The D90 is also the first DSLR to add video capability (High Definition 720p) for those that might be interested in that sort of thing. And unlike the kit lenses that other camera manufacturers offer, Nikon has tended to provide very high quality lenses in its kits and the 18-105mm VR lens that's supplied with the D90 continues the tradition. Better image quality, much better exposure accuracy, ease of use, larger, much sharper LCD display, better high ISO/low noise images, better WB, quicker operation and greater battery life are just some of its many improvements. It's a little more expensive but well worth the difference. Rather than the aging D80, consider Nikon's new replacement for it, the D90. It's a nice little camera but completely outclassed by the Sonys you listed as well as the D80 for many types of shots. I also have an S3 (Canon's S3 IS, not Fuji's S3 Pro or some other camera, right?). And actually, sports or other types of 'action' photography is where IS/VR might hurt rather than help your pictures. In low light or when you intentionally want to use the effect of slow shutter speeds it can help get much sharper pictures when the only alternative would be to carry a tripod. Not really important as I am used to SLR cameras.ĭon't discount the usefulness of Image Stabilization (Vibration Reduction or VR for Nikon's lenses).
